What is Dysport® and How Does It Work?

Dysport is a neuromodulator, not a dermal filler, which means it works by blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle tension, thereby allowing the overlying skin to become smooth. The active ingredient, abobotulinumtoxinA (botulinum toxin type A), is made from the same bacterial family that causes botulism, but it has been purified and used safely in medical and cosmetic applications for decades. When injected into targeted facial muscles, Dysport interrupts the signal between nerves and muscles without destroying the signal permanently. Over the course of four to five months, the nerve signal gradually returns, and wrinkles come back, making touch-up treatments necessary for continued results. Of course, you can also opt out of touch-ups, using Dysport instead as a one-time treatment for a specific event or situation.

Where Can Dysport Be Injected?

Dysport is FDA-approved and primarily intended to treat frown lines, those vertical lines that run between your eyebrows (also called glabellar lines or "11 lines"). These dynamic wrinkles form from repeated muscle contractions when you furrow your brow, concentrate, or express concern or frustration. Starting at a point above your eyebrows, Dysport is injected into five different areas, carefully selected for maximum results in smoothing these stubborn lines.

Beyond frown lines, Dysport can also be used to address crow's feet at the outer corners of the eyes and forehead wrinkles (horizontal lines across the forehead). These are common areas where dynamic wrinkles form due to repeated facial expressions, like smiling, squinting, and raising your eyebrows. Treatment takes between 10 and 20 minutes for each area, making it an incredibly convenient option for busy individuals. Results may last up to five months, providing long-lasting smoothness and a more youthful appearance.

What Makes Dysport Unique?

Safe and effective, this dynamic wrinkle relaxer spreads with a feathering effect that is unique among neuromodulator treatments, which allows results to taper off for a more natural look. The feathering effect also helps avoid the sharp lines of demarcation that can sometimes occur with other neuromodulators, contributing to a softer, more natural appearance.

While most neuromodulators take several days to a week to show full results, many patients notice visible improvement with Dysport in as few as two days, with optimal results appearing within five days. The Dysport Treatment Experience

Dysport injections are not considered painful, but they can be uncomfortable. The treatment involves using a very fine needle to inject small amounts of Dysport into targeted facial muscles. Most patients describe the sensation as a brief pinch or slight pressure. Injections may produce temporary redness and, in some cases, minor bruising at the injection sites. These effects should self-resolve within a few days of receiving your injections.

Dysport vs. Dermal Fillers: Understanding the Difference

It's important to understand that neuromodulators like Dysport and dermal fillers serve different purposes and treat different types of aging concerns. Dysport, like BOTOX Cosmetic and Xeomin, is a neuromodulator that works specifically to reduce dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movements. It cannot, however, reduce volume loss or treat static wrinkles that are present even when your face is at rest.

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, work to restore substances like hyaluronic acid and collagen, strengthening and filling the underlying structure to restore volume to areas impacted by aging. Dermal fillers in the Juvéderm™ family can treat fine lines and deep wrinkles, along with sunken cheeks, asymmetrical lips, and sagging jowls. Fillers can add volume to the cheeks, whereas neuromodulators cannot. However, fillers cannot reduce crow's feet, forehead wrinkles, and frown lines—concerns that neuromodulators are specifically designed to treat.

Safety, Side Effects, and Results

Dysport is well-tolerated, requires little to no downtime, and can produce results for several months. There are very few risks with Dysport injections when administered by a qualified professional. Redness, bruising, and slight discomfort at the injection site are the most common side effects, and these typically resolve within a few days. Other possible side effects include head and sinus pain, nose and throat irritation, vision disruptions, eyelid swelling or drooping, and nausea.

While extremely rare, there can be difficulties related to toxin spread that may require medical attention if they occur. Should you decide to stop treatment, your skin will simply return to its natural state. Dysport does not encourage additional wrinkling when discontinued or worsen your baseline appearance in any way.
